This is a great definition of “art” from Seth Godin:
My definition of art contains three elements:
- Art is made by a human being.
- Art is created to have an impact, to change someone else.
- Art is a gift. You can sell the souvenir, the canvas, the recording… but the idea itself is free, and the generosity is a critical part of making art.
By my definition, most art has nothing to do with oil paint or marble. Art is what we’re doing when we do our best work.
So you’re an artist. What are you making? Are you doing your best work?
so by your definition, I am an artist when I set a cordinated table for guests and serve a finely crafted meal and they feel cared for; I am an artist when the final product of decorating my home is to create an atmosphere in which people sense the simple beauty and relax and begin to really talk; I am an artist when I gather people together and stimulate conversation that goes to the heart; I am an artist… I could go on an on. O my gosh, even though I no longer have "position and authority" in a "job", I am suddenly seeing myself as a creator… of ATMOSPHERE wherever I go or whomever I talk to! In my home, with check-out people at Wal-Mart… everywhere! It's my life! ya' think?
Exactly, Clara! And as one who has been in your home, I'd agree that God has given you a gift for creating atmosphere.
