After Jesus heals a man born blind, and the religious leaders cannot figure out what’s going on (despite the man very clearly telling them), Jesus says:
“For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”
John 9:39
The judgment that Jesus brings into the world is that those who were told from birth that they know nothing of God’s kingdom receive it as sheer, surprising gift, and those who claim to have exclusive rights to God’s kingdom, who claim to control and dispense it, can’t even recognize it when it’s sitting right in front of them.
Those who claim to see grope around in their self-generated darkness, hilariously unable to ascertain how a blind man gained sight, because they’ve bracketed out the possibility that God might be at work through the ministry of Jesus.
Meanwhile, the man who was blind but now sees also comes to see and understand that Jesus is the one chosen to unleash God’s kingdom on the earth, and he responds as a disciple: trusting and worshiping.
