I am looking forward to reading this forthcoming book (ht Fitch):
As I talk with other missional church planters, I find that one issue that constantly comes up is the massive amount of “unlearning” and re-learning that needs to happen in order for people to really grab hold of what it means to be the people of God on mission. I am hoping will be the kind of book that will help to resource missional church planters and teams: a simple, practical, non-technical introduction to the basic tenets of missional church for ordinary people.
While we were in Nashville, we began to call this “changing our default mode.” It was a great phrase that helped us realize we were in that messy process of unlearning and relearning. We had to make a very conscious, deliberate effort in our thinking and decision making about how we lived our lives, and what system of values was motivating our actions. It’s been hard, but a good hard.
We are in town for the next two weekends, so I think we will be joining you on those Sundays.
Looking forward to seeing you and your family, Joshua.
The “unlearning” process is going to be an important one for us as a community as we begin to get together to pray/discuss through what “missional community” could look like.
Thanks Ben. Elizabeth and I have prayed for the two years we have been back in Fort Wayne, that our “changing our default modes” journey and experiences would allow us to serve and encourage others who want to move forward. Of course we don’t have it all figured out, but it’s hard to have those conversations with people who don’t want to have them. That is why it has been intriguing for us to potentially connect with you guys, because at the very least, you are having the conversations.
