Well, if we want to be more "missional", and not be so "in-the-church-building" focused….wouldn't it be "missional" to gather with neighbors, co-workers, etc. and watch the game together? What a great way to establish relationship and conversation …. gather together to do something important to them. Community can be partly cheering on your team together. It's why people gather in sports bars to watch the game! Taping the game to watch it later would seem to some people the same as if we taped our service and gave them a DVD instead of inviting them to come with us. I became a Colts fan because it gives me a connection to people I care about who care about football. It has nothing to do with who I worship more…. it has to do with building relationship with people.
Clara, I think you missed JR's tone (easy to do with Twitter) – he was being tongue-in-cheek about the who are you going to worship more thing.
I think gathering with people to watch the game is a great idea. I also think gathering to worship is a great idea, and missional churches need both kinds of gatherings, because we need worship in order to continue to have our lives shaped by the gospel, and we need engagement in order to continue to living out the implications of the gospel in our neighborhoods and social webs.
