I wonder what the long-term effects of this will be on our society.

No need to wait long-term. The effects are already present. I can tell you some long term effects of *not* watching TV….
When I’m asked why my kids are ‘different’ (and some refer to that as a negative thing), I say it’s not the homeschooling, not living in a large family, but not watching TV that has most affected my children.
Now watching videos is a problem…..
Elijahs preschool teacher said he is the ONLY kid who sits and finishes a lesson (writing letters etc) when they sit down to do it. i was suprised by that….we are the only family in there without cable, it makes me think that it must really affect attention span.
what is really sad is this though…
Our paper yesterday had an article titled “Hush, little baby, don’t touch that dial, STUDY: Some parents rely on TV to get kids to bed” It said one-third of children 6 and under have TV sets in their bedroom, and 37 percent of them are put to sleep watching TV by their parents.
!!!!

it wouldn’t be too bad if Barney Fife was the babysitter.
