And how about "take up your cross daily and follow me"? "Take up" seems to infer it is a choice and not just something that is our lot in life. We have to choose it? And so that begs the question as to what exactly is our cross? And yet Jesus says that His yoke is easy and His burden is light! I'm thinking that my "cross" may simply be the attitude and perspective I choose as I live my earthly life with all its hassles? Yet I am in discussion with someone who leans more to the suffering and pain that Jesus suffered carrying His cross. From that viewpoint, I can see why they think this is the scariest passage!! Sometimes talking to them scares me!
